thirunAngur thiruppathi 11: 11. thirup pArththan paLLi

With this tirumozhi the divya dESa of tiru nAngoor comes to an end. This pASura is sung by the mother of parakAla nAyaki (AzhwAr imagining himself as a women). AzhwAr has great attachment to this tirupati which is vividly revealed here.

1. kavaLayAnai komboSitta kaNNan enrum kAmaruSeer
kuvaLai mEhamanna mEni koNDakOn ennAnai enrum |
tavaLa mADam neeDu nAngai tAmaraiyAL kELvanenrum
pavaLavAyAL en maDandai pArtanpaLLi pADuvALE ||

parakAla nAyaki’s mother says this pASura in direct speech. The nAyaki is deeply in love with the Lord of pArttanpaLLi.

The mother says—listen to what my daughter says—‘Do You know what He has done? kamsa has brought up an elephant in order to kill kaNNan. He placed it in front of the palace where kaNNan came to mathura. You know what He did? He pulled out the tusk of this huge creature as easily as one pulls out a creeper from the wet land. Ah! He is a great hew!’.

‘Have you seen Him? Do you know how He looks like? He is dark and beautiful like kuvaLai flower and rain cloud. He is like an elephant which catches your eyes and attention. He is ArAvamudan’. ‘Do you know where He is? Consort of lakShmi lives in tirunAngai a city beautiful with tall white buildings’. There my daughter (pavaLavAyAL) sings His names and glories.

The place has got its name because it is said He lies here for the sake of pArtta (arjuna).

2. kanjan viTTavenjinatta kaLiraDartta kALaiyenrum
vanjammEvi vandapEyin uyiraiyuNDa mAyanenrum |
SenjolALar neeDu nAngai dEvadEvan enru enrOdi
panjiyanna mellaDiyAL pArtanpaLLi pADuvALE ||

The mother continues—my daughter says these things—‘Do you know His valour? He killed the kuvaLayApeeDa a wild mad angry elephant released by kamsa to kill Him’. ‘Do you know what He did to pEichchi? He sucked the milk along with her life and finished her’.

‘Do you know His greatness? He is dEva dEva residing in tirunAngai where vaidikas who always talk nice things and chant vEdas live’. Thus she talks of emberumAn of pArttanpaLLi.

3. aNDarkOn ennAnaiyenrum Ayar mAdar kongai pulhu
SeNDanenrum nAnmaraihaL tEDiyODum Selvanenrum |
vaNDulavu pozhilkoL nAngai mannumAyanenruu enrOdi
paNDupOlanru en maDandai pArtanpaLLi pADuvALE ||

The mother torments further—‘My daughter is not as before. She used to play with dolls, and houses, parrots with her playmates. Now she does nothing except calling His names, talking about Him and His guNas. She repeats ‘emberumAn of pArttanpaLLi’

‘Oh! My elephant! Oh! AyarpADi kaNNa! You are always mischievous that You embrace the girls and their breasts’.

‘He is not mere AyarpADi boy. He is great that even vEdas ran in search of Him but do not find Him’. He resides in nAngoor where there are plenty of forests and flowering trees which the bees seek.

‘He is a mAya. He has deluded me’.

aNDarkOn—aNDar means both dEvas and Ayars. Both the meanings suit the context.

nAn maraihaL tEDi Odum Selvam—The vEdas cannot talk fully of Him (since He is infinite how can finite terms express Him fully?) and say ‘yatO vAchO nivartantE aprApya manasA saha’ (The mind returns back with the words feeling exhausted).

4. kollaiyAnAL pariSazhindAL kOlvaLaiyAr tammuhappE
mallaimunneer taTTilangai kaTTazhitta mAyanenrum |
Selvam malhu maraiyOr nAngai devadEvan enru enrOdi
palvaLaiyAL en maDandai pArtanpaLLi pADuvALE ||

The mother continues—Oh! My daughter has lost all her decency and decorum due to a high cast lady. She used to chant His names when no one was present. Now she does so in front of her friends. She used to wear different kinds of bangles, for she is fond of the. Now her bangles are loose and slip down her hands since she is lean due to separation. But her friends have bangles intact for they are not mad as she is. If somebody asks who is this man, she replies—He is Sree rAma who built a bridge across the huge sea and crossed over to lankApuri to destroy the city as well as the rAkShasas. He is dEva dEva who resides in tiru nAngoor where the presence of well versed vaidikas makes the city prosperous. She thus keeps singing on BagavAn at pArttanpaLLi.

5. arakkarAvimALa anru Azh kaDalSoozh ilangai SeTTra
kuraikkaraSanenrum kOla villiyenrum mAmadiyai |
nerukkam mADam neeDunAngai ninmalantAn enru enrOdi
parakkazhindAL en maDandai pArtanpaLLi pADuvALE ||

The mother of parakAla nAyaki continues—

My daughter has been the target of gossip and blame. She keeps saying again and again—‘Oh! He is the one who killed the rAkShasas of lankApuri (which is surrounded by deaf seas). He is the swAmi of all the vAnaras; He is the one who bears a beautiful bow always, He resides in nAngoor where there are tall buildings which are so tall that they touch the sky and obstruct the movement of moon across the sky. He is the ‘purest of the pure’ and is my swAmi.

parakkazhindAL—Even ANDAL says kondalamAkki parakkazhindu (nAchchiyAr tirumozhi). periyavAchchAn piLLai has used it in the same sense. It is used in kamba rAmAyaNa of poet kamba in the same sense.

6. jnAlamuTTrum uNDumizhnda nAdanenrum nAnilamSoozh
vElaiyanna kOlamEni vaNNanenrum mElezhundu |
SEluhaLum vayalkoL nAngai dEvadEvan enru enrOdi
pAlinnallamenmozhiyAL pArtanpaLLi pADuvALE ||

The mother says—my daughter is very soft natured and speaks softly and sweetly like milk. She talks about nothing but Him. She says—He is the swAmi of all who swallowed the worlds during praLaya and spat them out during creation. He is beautifully dark like sea that surrounds the earth. He is the dEva dEva who resides in nAngoor where the fish play and jump in the rich fields.

7. nADi en tan uLLamkoNDa nAdanenrum nAnmaraihaL
tEDiyenrum kANamATTA Selvanenrum SiraikoLvaNDu |
SEDulavu pozhilkoL nAngai dEvadEvan enru enrOdi
pADahamum SEr mellaDiyAL pArtanpaLLi pADuvALE ||

The mother continues her talk—my daughter is very soft and tender. She has cotton like soft feet in which she wears anklets. He is not caught by vEdas which search for Him even today. Ah! He should Himself come to me on His own accord and stay in my mind! He is the dEva dEva who resides in tirunAngai which is rich in forest wealth to which swarms of bees retort for honey. She keeps singing of pArttanpaLLi nAdan.

8. ulahamEttum oruvanenrum oNSuDaroDumbareidA
nilavumAzhippaDaiyanenrum nESanenrum tendiSaikku |
tiladumanna maraiyOr nAngai dEvadEvan enru enrOdi
palarumESa en maDandai pArtanpaLLi pADuvALE ||

The mother continues about her daughter—she says—‘He is praised by all the people of all the worlds, He is not got even by dEvas. He bears chakrAyudha which is mere brilliant than sun and moon. He is liked by all Baktas and He likes all Baktas. He is the dEva dEva of tiru nAngoor which is like tilaka of the south since it has vaidikas.

oNSuDarODu umbar eidA—It is interpreted in two ways. He who carries oNSuDar Azhi cannot be reached (or) the oNDSuDar Azhi cannot be equaled in brilliance by suns and moon.

palarum ESa—People immersed in worldly matters will eulogize only those who are like them but will condemn to those who are devoted only to BagavAn.

9. kaNNanenrum vAnavarhaL kAdalittu malarhaL toovum
eNNanenrum inbanenrum EzhulahukkAdiyenrum |
tiNNamADaneeDu nAngai dEvadEvan enru enrOdi
paNNinanna men mozhiyAL pArtanpaLLi pADuvALE ||

The mother of parakAla nAyaki says—my daughter calls Him by several names and meditate on His guNas. She calls ‘kaNNa! ‘eNNa! Who lives in the hearts of all the dEvas and Baktas who worship Him with flowers; He is sweet, bliss absolute. He is the creator, cause of all the worlds. He resides in tiru nAngoor where strong buildings are found. He is the dEva dEva of pArttanpaLLi.

vArkoL nallamalaimaDavAL pADalai tAimozhinda mATTram |
koorkoL nallavElkaliyan koorutamizh pattum vallAr
ErkoL nallavaihundattuL inbamALumeiduvArE ||

parakAla nAyaki’s words about SengaNmAl who resides in pArttanpaLLi of tiru nAngoor, are expressed in these pASuras by her mother. Those who read these ten pASuras of tirumangai AzhwAr will reach paramapada and experience the everlasting bliss.
